McPalin, Joebama: Who’s going to be the McChanger?
By Rima Abdelkader
The American mainstream news media and blogosphere have quickly turned their attention from Joebama to McPalin – but more so to Republican VP and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin – in just days following the Republican Party’s historic game changing move. And it’s not just her nomination speech that’s attracting attention.
Where does Palin buy her eyewear? Is she wearing Franco Sarto boots? When are BriLevi going to marry? (They may have already. Facebook has Bristol Palin-Johnston listed.) Did Lynne Spears send a gift to Bristol? Did the Westwind II jet sell on Ebay? Will Oprah ever have Palin on her show? Why is the media sexist when it comes to Palin?
McCain-Palin Republican presidential campaign buttons now read “The Hottest Chick,” “Our mama is better than your Obama,” “Read my Lipstick,” “She proved you can throw a punch with a French manicure.”
She’s been in the spotlight for nine days and has given plenty of news (good or bad, your pick) for the media to talk about – even if she’s not taking any interviews from many news media. (She did however give ABC’s Charles Gibson an interview recently, and MTV’s Alaska Street Teamer Dani Carlson an interview on Super Tuesday in February before her nomination.)
Her newborn son Trig has drawn attention to Down Syndrome; her daughter Bristol has raised awareness of teen pregnancy even if Palin reportedly favors abstinence-only education …and her daughter might even raise the profile of the American TV drama summer hit The Secret Life of the American Teenager; her Kazuo Kawasaki 704 series eyeglasses are reportedly flying off the shelves; her soon to be deployed son Track has put the focus on military service; her American dream has even raised the profile of Hockey moms; and her hand-gelling daughter Piper is already a hit on YouTube. The list goes on.
On the jet. Though her Westwind II jet did sell, it sold at a loss and not on Ebay as John McCain mistakenly said on Friday, but reportedly by a campaign contributor.
We’ve also been hearing a lot of sexist talk from the American mainstream media and Joebama Democrats, alleges the Republican Party. Asked by ABC News’ Jake Taper which Joebama Democrats have attacked Palin’s family, Taper in his blog said the McCain and Republican National Committee spokespeople told him: “Obama spokesman Mark Bubriski erroneously attacked Palin as a supporter of Pat Buchanan.” This, Taper said, was the only evidence he received from them of this alleged sexist talk. Readers, if you have any other examples, feel free to post.
There is also talk in the blogosphere that Track was forced to join the army or face jail time for alleged bus vandalism that he and three of his friends allegedly committed in 2005. The media has yet to address this allegation. Right now, Palin’s firing of Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten is under investigation. Wooten gave an exclusive interview with CNN’s Drew Griffin.
Health, Business, Fashion, Beauty, Opinion – her nomination is enough to keep the news media occupied even past the November elections. And just think, this VP nomination originated from Adam Brickley’s blog.
Only time will tell when Palin’s Thursday statement is answered: There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you … in places where winning means survival and defeat means death … and that man is __________.
What do you think? Who is going to be the McChanger?
