Phantom Hydrant Still Haunts Motorist

July 17th, 2008 by Joe Filippazzo

This article appeared in the 17 July issue of The Canarsie Digest.

Simon Belsky says he gets no respect. And he may just have a $200 ticket and the pictures to prove it.

Though he sports an uncanny resemblance to late comedian Rodney Dangerfield (with the voice and shtick to boot), Belsky isn’t laughing about the summons he received over a year and a half ago, which he has been fighting ever since.

Building a Concensus

February 12th, 2008 by Joe Filippazzo

The Golden Gate Motor Inn in Sheepshead Bay has gone where all financial sinkholes on valuable Brooklyn property go: death row. And the motel’s new owner may have plans to demolish the building in favor of a more lucrative business, but not without community input first.

Harshad “Nick” Patel of the development company Krishna Management LLC and the owner of the Golden Gate, asked Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz to call an informal meeting for Feb. 5, ostensibly to take suggestions from the community. Local groups invited to the meeting included Community Board 15, the Sheepshead Bay/Plum Beach Civic Association and the Bay Improvement Group. Patel, however, did not attend.

A Floundering Industry in Sheepshead Bay

January 7th, 2008 by Joe Filippazzo

This article appeared in the 7 January issue of The Brooklyn View.

“I think I just got screwed out of some money,” Bobby Fish said as he thumbed through the crumpled ball of fives and tens in his calloused, grease-stained hand. As second mate on the Sea Wolf, a dilapidated party boat that operates out of Sheepshead Bay, he and his first mate Kenny agreed that the commercial fishing industry here has seen better days.

The trouble for fishing boats began back in the 1930’s when business was great. But after decades of over-fishing, which has brought several species to the brink of collapse, the federal government passed the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act in 1976, which gets ratified annually by Congress. The goal was to end over-fishing and rebuild fish stocks by enforcing stricter regulations.

“They put these insane, asinine laws in place,” said Bobby Fish, “and they make it impossible.”

Community to Councilman: Brigham On!

December 10th, 2007 by Joe Filippazzo

This article appeared in the 10 December issue of The Brooklyn Eagle.

Efforts to turn the embattled Brigham Street lot in Sheepshead Bay into a green space began to bear fruit this week as the district’s first community-born park project got a crucial boost.

New Yorkers for Parks named the two-acre plot – the only remaining undeveloped land on Sheepshead Bay’s north shore – its Community Design Program project for 2008.
