Thursday night was the gallery opening reception for “When a Big Tree Falls,” an exhibit by Vishavjit Singh that commemorates this year being the 25th anniversary of Operation Blue Star and the massacre of Sikhs during the anti-Sikh riots.

In this exhibit, Singh sought to illustrate the events that occurred in North India during the year 1984 via a narrative series of select Sikhtoons, Sikh cartoons, that ends in the present day.

Sikhtoons were begun by Singh seven years ago in response to the work of American editorial cartoonists after the events of 9/11. Through Sikhtoons, Singh sought to give a voice to Sikh aspirations and frustrations.

The exhibit is running through Nov. 28 at the Artists’ Gallery, 530 W. 25th Street, Suite 406, in Chelsea. For more great Sikhtoons, try www.sikhtoons.com
