Professional Storyteller Spins Monkey King Yarn

Diane Wolkstein premiered her telling of the Monkey King epic, one of China’s best loved stories, at the Queens Flushing Library this past Saturday.  The professional storyteller, who has been spinning yarns for forty-two years, gave an abridged version of the one hundred chapter story.  With musical accompaniment by Jeff Greene, she acted out the story of the Monkey King, who was born from a stone, discovered immortality, and angered the gods.

“The story takes a lifetime to learn,” said Ms. Wolkstein.

She’ll perform a longer version of the epic, with dancer Anita Ratnam, at LaGuardia College’s Performing Arts Center on October 29 and October 30.

Hey Suyeon, I really like the way you filmed this. It’s often hard to capture a venue, performance and crowd reaction in the retelling of something you have just seen (like play or art exhibit) but I think you did a great job doing just that. Well done!
